Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. She was also raised by her maternal grandmother, and was raised as a single child. Scott completed her studies at the Philadelphia High School for Girls. Then she enrolled in Temple University. She completed her secondary education the course of two years while also working. She hoped she would become an English high school teacher. After three years as a teacher's aide and studying her goal of becoming a high-school English teacher fell through. She began her career by doing live performances of poems as well as her own work. She eventually joined forces with Amir Quest Thompson, a part of The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by the two. Her first public appearance was as a performer at the Roots Show. After that, she got collaborations for instance, with Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. She was able to perform through the Canada tour of Broadway's musical Rent. Also, she was the first signed by Hidden Beach Recordings.
